Overview
This article provides the steps to move GFI EventsManager to a new server while retaining the current configuration settings, in cases such as replacing your old server for a new one.
Prerequisites
Before starting the migration process, please check the Installation Requirements for GFI EventsManager to ensure you are not moving to an unsupported server (e.g. Windows Server 2019).
Solution
There are two stages to the server migration: making a backup of the current configuration and importing the configuration into the new server.
Making a backup of the current configuration
- Open the GFI EventsManager configuration on the current server.
- Click File and select Import and Export Configurations.
- From the Import and Export Configurations Wizard, select Export the desired configurations to a file.
- Click Next.
- Enter a file name and destination where you want to save your backup configuration file.
- Click Next.
- Select the options you wish to export to the new GFI EventsManager Server. If you want to copy the entire configuration, click the Select All button, then click the Next button to proceed. The configuration is now exported.
- Stop the GFI EventsManager service on the current server.
Note for EventsManager 2012 and newer versions: If the GFI EventsManager database resides on the same server and you wish to move the database to the new server, follow the procedure described in the article Moving the DLib Database Between Two GFI EventsManager Servers.
Importing the backup configuration on the new server
- Download the latest EventsManager version 13.2.
- Install GFI EventsManager on the new machine.
- Install the latest patches.
- Enter the license key retrieved from Accounts portal. You can disable the GFI services on the old server and activate the new installation with a full license key without any licensing conflicts.
For more info, refer to the article Updating the License Key in GFI EventsManager. - Copy the backup configuration file created in the previous procedure onto the new server where you installed EventsManager.
- Open the GFI EventsManager Configuration on the new machine.
- Click File and select Import and Export Configurations.
- From the Import and Export Configurations Wizard, click Import to import the desired configurations from a file and click Next.
- Locate the backup configuration file and click Next.
- Select the options you wish to import on to the new GFI EventsManager Server. If you want to copy the entire configuration, click the Select All button. Then click the Next button to proceed.
Note: You might encounter a warning message saying that a policy with the same name already exists. You can safely confirm the replacement by clicking the Yes button. - The GFI EventsManager configuration has now been imported.
Migrating custom reports
If you have custom reports that you'd like to transfer to the new server, follow the steps detailed in Exporting reports from one EventsManager installation to another.
Notes:
You cannot use the same license key on the two GFI EventsManager applications at the same time, but you can Request a New Customer Trial License Key (valid for 30 days) to be used on your new server and once you're ready, disable the old server and install your current license key on your new server.
Once the migration is complete, you will need to update your Syslog and SNMP devices to point to the new GFI EventsManager server (IP/ Hostname).
